Do you have a question?Ask Emma

What is a climbing trangle?

A climbing triangle is an indoor climbing frame, originally conceived by pediatrician Emmi Pikler. The fixed triangular shape has the perfect proportions to enable young children to pull themselves up. It keeps toddlers active and curious while they learn how to climb safely. Ette Tete’s climbing triangles were inspired by this ingenious design and took it a step further! Thanks to the different segments of the Mopitri or Fipitri, you can create endless variations on the shape of the frame. This way, your little one will never get bored of this climbing frame! After a while, it becomes the centerpiece of their imaginative play. The structure is designed to give children the opportunity to learn how their bodies can move in different ways, thereby developing their motor and cognitive skills.

When can your child learn to discover the climbing triangle?

It may sound crazy, this is possible from birth! Of course you can't crawl on it yet, but you can put a baby nest under the frame and somenice cellphones orrattles hang on the bars. From 6 months, most babies can straighten up, which is an ideal time to introduce an Ette Tete climbing frame. Depending on your baby's development, he or she may use the triangle to pull up to a standing position and may even attempt to climb. Always under supervision of course. Your child will gradually gain confidence in his/her own body, so that he or she is little by little more daring and able.

How do you play with a climbing frame?

A climbing triangle lets children climb, crawl, and slide. It also stimulates children’s imagination. As children develop, they’ll interpret the climbing frame in many different ways. Give your child the freedom, and they’ll find countless ways to play with the Mopitri, Fipitri, or Sipitri. Looking for some extra inspiration? Here are a few ways to use the Ette Tete climbing frame:

A mountain—climb to the top
A tunnel
A drying rack for doll clothes
A cozy little nest for reading
A tent or bear cave—throw a sheet over it and make it nice and dark
A race track
A pirate ship with a plank
A catwalk for teddy bears
A garage for favorite cars and buses

As a parent, you can adjust the frame into different shapes using the wooden knobs. There are countless possible positions.

Emmi Pikler's Philosophy

The climbing triangle was developed by pediatrician and educator Emmi Pikler. According to her philosophy, “what a child is capable of doing at a given moment is the perfect thing for him or her to do.” As children gain more confidence in their own abilities, they become much more physically self-aware. They learn to understand their bodies and themselves—the triangle will help them do so in a safe and familiar way. Ette Tete’s climbing frames were designed and manufactured in full compliance with all safety standards. We definitely recommend using it under supervision, with adult oversight from a distance. Usually, children only climb as high as they feel safe and comfortable. If an adult intervenes, a child will often reach heights they couldn’t physically reach on their own, and is more likely to get “stuck.” Trust that your child will enjoy the triangle at their own pace and take on what they are capable of at that moment.

Pikler & Montessori

The climbing triangle is often used in the context of the Montessori philosophy. This philosophy is based on the idea of allowing children to develop naturally through freedom of movement and exploration. Our wooden climbing frames are made from natural materials and encourage this development, which means they align very well with Maria Montessori’s philosophy, just like all the toys in the “open-ended play” category where a child can use their own imagination.

Mopitri of Ette Tete

Ette Tete’s climbing frames come in three versions: the Mopitri, the Fipitri, and the Sipitri. The Mopitri is an adjustable climbing frame consisting of four segments. Change the shape of the climbing triangle regularly so your child can discover new things and skills every time. A lower or steeper triangle, a rectangle, or perhaps two small triangles—the possibilities are endless. Let your child take the lead in shaping the Mopitri. With an additional element, you can easily turn the Mopitri into a 5-element Fipitri.

Fipitri of Ette Tete

The difference between the Mopitri and the Fipitri of Ette Tete? The number of elements. The Mopitri consists of 4 customizable elements, the Fipitri consists of 5 elements. So with the Fipitri you have more options to make a higher triangle. All Ette Tete climbing frames are made from FSC-certified birch plywood, with child-resistant paint or varnish. The Fipitri and Mopitri are available in natural wood color and fit perfectly into any interior. They are made to last for generations.

The accessories of a climbing triangle

Endless fun with your climbing frame. In addition to an extra piece that turns your 4-piece Mopitri into a 5-piece Fipitri, there are several accessories that are the perfect fit for your climbing frame. You can choose to mount a ramp on your triangle frame. Is it a tool for climbing up or a slide? Or both? At Hello Archie, you have the option to purchase your Mopitri or Fipitri including a slide or ramp. More fun items to pair with your climbing frame: Grapat marbles, toy cars, a fun blanket to drape over it… or combine with other open-ended toys to further stimulate your child’s imagination.
